Crewe withstood intense second-half pressure from Orient to record only their second away win of the season courtesy of Nicky Maynard's goal. Crewe debutant Gary Roberts forced keeper Stuart Nelson into a save at full stretch and the visitors also had a Byron Moore goal ruled out.
Maynard exploited uncertainty in Orient's defence soon after Tamika Mkandawire went off due to injury.
Orient improved after the break but they were unable to pull level.
