Carlisle were denied their first away win for three-and-a-half months when Port Vale skipper Paul Harsley buried a late penalty to snatch a draw. The first half was dominated by the hosts, Tobias Mikaelsson and Harsley both wasting good openings.
And Vale were made to pay for their profligacy when Joe Garner volleyed home his 14th goal of the season.
However, on 84 minutes, Kyle Perry was fouled by Peter Murphy and Harsley made no mistake from the spot.
