Brighton new boy Glenn Murray scored twice on his debut as his side ended a winless run of five games and left Crewe without a victory in six matches. Murray, the Seagulls' biggest purchase for 25 years, opened his account from close range after Guy Butters headed down a corner from Dean Cox.
Crewe's Eugen Bopp hit the bar before Butters volleyed Brighton's second.
Murray hit his second before half-time, again from close range, after Nicky Forster flicked on Cox's cross.
