James Hayter's late scrambled goal settled a tense promotion clash in Doncaster's favour. Rovers dominated, and they got the goal they deserved when a goalmouth scramble ended with Steve Roberts's overhead kick deflecting in off Hayter's knee.
Ritchie Wellens had the ball in the net in the first half, but the goal was ruled out for a push.
Carlisle came desperately close to an injury-time equaliser but Neil Sullivan denied Joe Garner with a superb save.
