Leyton Orient missed the chance to return to the top of League One. Orient took a first-half lead when Adam Boyd and Sean Thornton set up Wayne Gray to score with a rising shot.
Careless defending allowed striker Nicky Forster to hammer in the equaliser for Brighton, although keeper Stuart Nelson might have done better.
Orient midfielder Jason Demetriou restored the home side's lead with a classy goal, before Dean Cox headed in after Forster's effort struck the bar.
