Junior Agogo's late strike propelled Nottingham Forest into the top six. The game looked to be heading for a draw until Agogo fired home the rebound after Jan Budtz had only managed to parry Kris Commons' long-range shot.
Commons gave Forest the lead when he bundled the ball over the line after Julian Bennett's cross had been knocked down by Nathan Tyson.
Hartlepool equalised when Richie Barker capitalised on slack marking to head Ian Moore's cross past Paul Smith.
