Oldham climbed off the bottom of the League One table with a comfortable win over fellow-strugglers Walsall. Michael Ricketts - playing against his first league club - put Oldham ahead in after 33 minutes with a low drive.
The Saddlers' hopes died in the 64th minute when Andy Liddell hammered in a penalty for the visitors after Ricketts was fouled by Scott Dann.
Lee Hughes shot over when he might have scored his first Oldham goal before Craig Davies fired in from 20 yards.
