Leeds scored three late goals to win their third straight game. Alan Thompson opened the scoring with a free-kick but Adam Barrett equalised for Southend with a header after Matt Harrold's shot had been parried.
Leeds took the lead again after 85 minutes when Tore Andre Flo struck from 12 yards and Rui Marques then converted a corner from Sebastien Carole.
Jermaine Beckford then capped a fine performance with an 18-yard volley after a long pass from Tresor Kandol.
