Tommy Mooney marked his Walsall debut with the goal that earned a point. Carlisle had dominated the first half and they fully deserved the 19th minute lead given to them by Kevin Gall, who fired home Simon Hackney's pass.
But Mooney celebrated his 36th birthday with a left-foot finish two minutes after the break that went in off the post after good work by Paul Boertien.
After the break Carlisle's former Walsall defender Zigor Aranalde went closest but his shot went wide.
