Cheltenham edged out Gillingham in a stormy confrontation that saw three players sent off. Steve Gillespie got the winner after 24 minutes, despite looking well offside.
Referee Paul Melin also upset the Gills when he harshly sent off Ian Cox for tussling with Paul Connor, then Steve Lomas for a second yellow card.
Cheltenham's Gillespie became the third player to see red after 79 minutes, when he picked up a second yellow card for failing to retreat at a freee-kick.
