Barnsley's best chance came six minutes before the interval when Brian Howard fired a 20-yard shot over the crossbar.

Barnsley should have taken the lead early in the second half when Paul Heckingbottom's cross was headed narrowly over by Paul Hayes.

But Barnsley were indebted to keeper Nick Colgan in the last minute when he saved from James Hayter with his legs.
