Crystal Palace   0 - 0   Norwich

Highlights - Crystal Palace 0-0 Norwich City

Crystal Palace 0-0 Norwich

Norwich overtook Cardiff to move second in the Championship table after a stalemate at struggling Crystal Palace.

The Canaries would taken all three points late on but for Grant Holt blazing over from eight yards.

In the first half, Norwich's Andrew Crofts nodded wide from close range, while home keeper Julian Speroni did well to tip over a Wes Hoolahan curler.

In an end-to-end second period, Palace sub Wilfried Zaha forced a fine save from John Ruddy before Holt's howler.

Holt's miss will be all the more difficult for Norwich and their manager Paul Lambert to stomach after their automatic promotion rivals Queens Park Rangers were also held to a goalless draw at Hull to maintain their five-point lead at the top.

With 19 places separating Palace and the Canaries at kick-off, the visitors looked every bit the favourites to triumph as they pinged the ball about confidently to create two decent early chances.

First, Henri Lansbury, back on loan from Arsenal, headed over before Crofts could not keep his glancing effort on target in the third minute.

Winger Hoolahan gathered a dreadful Alex Marrow clearance on the edge of the area but Speroni was equal to the Irishman's top corner-bound attempt.

Everton loanee James Vaughan narrowly failed to get a touch on a Sean Scannell centre with the goal gaping, and the home side went even closer on the half-hour when Paddy McCarthy's header flew wide after the Eagles skipper had connected with Darren Ambrose's floated free-kick.

Vaughan was later lucky to escape a second yellow card when he appeared to catch Adam Drury with a stray arm.

After the break, Ruddy needed to be alert to keep out a Sean Scannell pile-driver and an angled Zaha shot.

The Selhurst Park faithful breathed a collective sigh of relief, though, when the ball fell kindly for the usually clinical Holt only for the striker to wallop embarrassingly high of the target to ensure a second successive home scoreless draw for Palace.
