Micky Adams' first home game in charge of Sheffield United ended in a draw thanks to Rob Kozluk's goal deep into injury time against 10-man Doncaster.
Dennis Souza's second yellow card for a foul on Ched Evans left the away side a man light for the final 30 minutes.
A Billy Sharp brace - the second a penalty - against his former club seemed to have given Rovers the points.
But Daniel Bogdanovic pulled one back and in the sixth minute of added time Kozluk snatched a point for the Blades.
That - along with a marginally superior goal difference - is all that separates United from Crystal Palace in 22nd place, following the London club's 1-0 win over bottom side Preston on Monday.
It also ended a run of three successive defeats for United as Adams seeks to steer the team away from the relegation zone.
United adopted the more physical approach, but Rovers provided the fluent football and will be disappointed not to have held out for the win.
A first-half bodycheck on Mark Yeates and then a rash challenge on Evans earned Souza his two yellow cards.
However, shortly after the dismissal, the impressive James Coppinger crossed low for Sharp, who composed himself before finishing right-footed into the corner from 12 yards in the 66th minute.
It got even better for the visitors soon after when Kozluk's push on Coppinger gave United fan Sharp the chance to double his side's lead, which he duly took from the penalty spot.
Substitute Bogdanovic fired home from 10 yards late on to give United hope of an unlikely point, which Kozluk made reality with a 12-yard volley in the dying seconds.
