David Healy's superb drive helped Doncaster secure an enthralling 3-2 victory away at Portsmouth.
Healy scored from 20 yards late in the second half, curtailing a resurgence from the resilient home side.
James Hayter and James Coppinger gave the visitors an early 2-0 cushion before Joel Ward gave Pompey a foothold early in the second half.
Goalkeeper Neil Sullivan fumbled in the box, allowing David Nugent to equalise, but Healy's strike settled the match.
It was a fine way for the team from south Yorkshire to celebrate their first trip to Portsmouth for 28 seasons, and the hosts ended the match on a sour note when Carl Dickinson was sent off.
Pompey started the match brightly and forced Sullivan into a save in the opening minute after a Doncaster defensive mix-up allowed John Utaka to play in a great ball for Nugent to head goalwards from six yards.
For the visitors, John Oster played in a great ball with the outside of his boot to Hayter, who produced a smart turn and strike that Portsmouth keeper Jamie Ashdown did well to tip around the post in the 10th minute.
Hayter was not to be denied for long, though. Five minutes later some smart play from Healy saw the ball fall to the striker, who managed to divert it past Ashdown and into the roof of the net.
Fratton Park fell silent again in the 26th minute when Coppinger doubled the visitors' advantage, ignoring Portsmouth's pleas for a foul by Mustapha Dumbuya and dinking the ball over Ashdown.
Portsmouth played more brightly in the second half and the pressure paid off when Utaka drilled a great ball across the box and substitute Ward tapped home at the back post.
Sullivan's blunder handed Pompey an equaliser, but as the hosts pressed for the winner Healy settled the match in the 79th minute with a great strike.
