Hull City climbed out of the relegation zone after an impressive victory over fellow strugglers Preston at Deepdale.
The visitors took the lead through a diving Richard Garcia header from Robert Koren's cross.
Preston almost levelled after the break but goalkeeper Vito Mannone tipped Iain Hume's long-range drive on to the post.
Nick Barmby doubled Hull's lead with a neat finish from Garcia's cross before Jay Simpson hit the post after being gifted a golden chance to make it 3-0.
A sixth home defeat in nine increases the pressure on North End boss Darren Ferguson, whose team have won only once in their last eight games.
And a point for Crystal Palace against Coventry on Saturday will be enough to send Preston to the bottom of the Championship table.
The Yorkshire club made the brighter start and Australian forward Garcia shot wastefully wide in the 15th minute after Koren's measured pass.
The same two players combined again to give Hull the lead with Koren advancing into space down the right flank and whipping over an inviting cross into the path of Garcia, who headed home superbly.
At the other end, Preston fashioned a clear chance for Adam Barton, who flashed his header wide from Callum Davidson's cross.
Seven minutes after the break, Hume's low drive looked destined for the bottom corner, but the slightest of touches from Mannone was enough to keep it out, the ball striking the inside of a post and rolling along the goal-line.
Hull's victory was sealed when makeshift left-back Sean St Ledger was easily muscled off the ball by Garcia, who got to the byeline and pulled the ball back for substitute Barmby to slot home.
