Championship leaders QPR avoided their first defeat of the season thanks to a late penalty from Tommy Smith.
Liam Lawrence handled Smith's cross, and was sent off for a second yellow leaving Smith to convert the spot-kick.
Portsmouth had taken the lead from a retaken penalty of their own, Lawrence scoring after Matthew Connolly saw red.
Dave Kitson tumbled inside the area following Kanu's pass, and Paddy Kenny saved Lawrence's first penalty, but was adjudged to have moved off his line.
When the penalty was taken again Lawrence made no mistake.
Portsmouth played some bright football throughout, with Kanu a forceful presence, and the best opportunity of the first half fell to John Utaka.
He raced clear before cutting inside to fire a fierce shot that cannoned back off the crossbar.
A number of QPR attacks were broken down by the excellent Hayden Mullins, but Rob Hulse had a great chance to open the scoring early in the second half only to see his header brilliantly saved by Jamie Ashdown following a pin-point cross from Smith.
Then game sparked into life in the 70th minute when Connolly was dismissed after bringing down Kitson in the box.
Lawrence scored at the second time of asking, smashing home to give Pompey the lead.
Utaka was denied by Kyle Walker's brilliant defending as the hosts looked to make it 2-0.
But the visitors refused to head back to west London without at least a point and were given a lifeline in the 90th minute when Lawrence was adjudged to have handled a Smith cross.
Lawrence was given his second booking before Smith stepped up and placed the ball beyond Ashdown to keep Rangers top of the table.
