Robert Snodgrass sparkled as Leeds edged a thrilling match at Coventry.
Jonny Howson nodded an early opener for the visitors before Snodgrass cut in from the right before curling home a 20-yard stunner to double the lead.
Lukas Jutkiewicz converted Ben Turner's header to pull one back but Leeds soon extended the lead with a Max Gradel penalty following a Richard Keogh foul.
Turner poked in Coventry's second but had to produce a fine tackle to deny Leeds a fourth in the closing stages.
Although Leeds' preparations were hit when goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel withdrew on Friday to attend the birth of his son, they performed admirably throughout against a side also pushing strongly for promotion to the top-flight.
It took them just four minutes to score with a Howson header but the hosts soon settled down and were almost rewarded with an equaliser when Jutkiewicz wasted a chance when one-on-one before being closed down by Paul Connolly.
As half-time approached Leeds struck again when Snodgrass, the Scottish playmaker who was injured for the first seven weeks of the season, blasted in after a fine run.
The Sky Blues were back in the game after the break thanks to Jutkiewicz, before Gradel tucked in his spot-kick on the hour.
Turner impressed at both ends and got the deficit back to one as his team pushed desperately for the equaliser but a Richard Wood header, which was saved by keeper Brown, was the closest they got.
