Bristol City extended their unbeaten run to four games thanks to an own goal from Preston defender Billy Jones.
Jones headed into his own net under pressure and City's Albert Adomah almost grabbed a winner when he hit the woodwork with a late strike
Iain Hume had given Preston an early lead from Sean St Ledger's cross.
Hume also hit the woodwork after the break and David James tipped a Jon Parkin shot against the crossbar before denying the striker again late on.
But it was City who finished the match on top as they looked to leapfrog their opponents in the Championship table.
Brett Pitman went close, as did Marvin Elliott, but there was to be no winner for Keith Millen's improving side.
The result meant the Robins remained in the relegation zone, third from bottom and one place below North End.
