Struggling Middlesbrough began life after Gordon Strachan with their fifth away defeat in a row as they slipped up against Nottingham Forest.
Strachan's stint as Boro boss ended on Monday but they began this game well, with Leroy Lita twice firing wide.
But Radoslaw Majewski curled against the bar for Forest and the home side took the lead after the break when Lewis McGugan's cross-shot sailed in.
Dele Adebola had a header saved as Forest finished the stronger team.
The win lifts Forest up to 13th in the Championship and extends their unbeaten home record in the league to 25 games.
They improved as the game went on, but Boro should have capitalised on their early dominance to go in front at the City Ground.
Forest keeper Lee Camp had to be alert to parry away Scott McDonald's shot, before he did well to get down to a stinging Lita drive.
Lita dragged across the face of goal and, after Dexter Blackstock missed the target from six yards for Forest, Lita missed an even better chance with the goal gaping after being teed up by Mickael Tavares.
But Forest improved and after Majewski's close shave with the woodwork they went ahead when McGugan was fouled down the left by Tavares and from the free-kick the Reds midfielder's wicked delivery flew into the top corner.
Jason Steele saved well from Adebola as Forest threatened to score a second and though Boro put some pressure on in the final stages, the hosts hung on for the three points.
