Chris Eagles scored twice as Burnley moved up to fourth in the Championship after extending their unbeaten run to seven matches with a comfortable win.
Eagles, 24, broke the deadlock in the 50th minute with a curling 25-yard shot following a lay-off from Wade Elliott.
An Eagles cross then hit the raised arms of Nathan Doyle, allowing the former Manchester United winger to slot into the corner from the penalty spot.
Jay Rodriguez hit a post before Chris Iwelumo drilled in a close-range third.
The Clarets unbeaten home record remained intact as they turned on the style in a one-way second half.
But Eagles looked in the mood from the start, delivering a threatening ball into the box for Rodriguez which the youngster was inches away from converting having cleverly pulled away at the back post.
The visitors could have gone ahead in the seventh minute after Hugo Colace dinked a ball over Andre Bikey for Goran Lovre, but Leon Cort came racing back to clear the danger.
Barnsley could not make the most of good possession in the first-half and the hosts broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when Eagles angled his shot past Luke Steele from long range.
When Eagles' cross then struck the raised arms of Doyle in the 66th minute, the linesman quickly flagged for a penalty.
After a slight delay while Barnsley protested the decision, Eagles beat Steele with pace and power.
Iwelumo wrapped things up nine minutes from time after drilling the ball home after it broke kindly in the box.
