Barnsley became only the second side to beat Nottingham Forest this season in the Championship.
Nathan Doyle had given Barnsley an early lead with his first senior goal for the club.
Andy Gray converted a second-half penalty after Dexter Blackstock brought down Goran Lovre.
Lewis McGugan gave Forest hope when he scored for the visitors but Barnsley substitute Jacob Butterfield scored late on to secure the victory.
Barnsley's lead came as a result of their first attack. Winger Adam Hammill cut the ball back from the byline and Doyle calmly despatched a right-footed shot into the bottom corner from 12 yards.
Forest responded with a wayward 30-yard shot from defender Wes Morgan, but chances for either side were limited until Forest's Chris Cohen blasted a 25-yard effort narrowly past the post in the 33rd minute.
Blackstock went closest to equalising for Forest in the first half when his shot was blocked by Barnsley captain Stephen Foster in stoppage time.
Barnsley doubled their advantage after the break when Gray scored his 100th senior goal. The much-travelled Tykes striker, at his eighth club, converted from the penalty spot after Lovre's foul on Blackstock, planting the ball right-footed beyond Forest goalkeeper Lee Camp.
Forest almost responded when David McGoldrick's angled drive rattled the Barnsley post before McGugan did reduce the deficit with his fifth goal in the last six games, firing a low shot into the bottom corner.
But Barnsley made sure of victory when Butterfield, an 80th-minute replacement for Lovre, planted a left-footed finish into the bottom corner from 18 yards latching onto Hamill's pass.
