Chris Dagnall scored twice as Scunthorpe put the departure of manager Nigel Adkins behind them with a sensational away win.
Dagnall opened the scoring with a powerful low shot, though he may have controlled the ball with his arm.
David Mirfin superbly headed a second before Dagnall slotted in and then Martyn Woolford lofted into an empty net from 40 yards to wrap things up.
The margin of defeat was harsh on the hosts, who struck the woodwork twice.
Scunthorpe, who lost Adkins to League One Southampton on Sunday, defended stoutly after being put on the back foot for long periods at Bramall Lane.
The Blades saw two goal-bound headers cleared off the line and had a goal disallowed after the break as they battled for a foothold.
But the 4-0 scoreline for Scunthorpe will only enhance caretaker boss Ian Baraclough's chances of securing the club's managerial reins on a permanent basis.
