Garry Thompson scored twice as Scunthorpe went five points clear of the drop zone by beating Peterborough.
Paul Hayes fired in from a tight angle for the opener, and the striker turned provider 10 minutes later when he picked out Thompson for the second.
Sam Togwell slotted home before the break, before Hayes played in Thompson for a fourth after the restart.
Craig Mackail-Smith forced a superb save from home keeper Joe Murphy but Posh were out of the contest by then.
Scunthorpe United boss Nigel Adkins: "I thought the first half was exceptional and the players went out there feeling 10 feet tall.
"They played some great football, created lots of opportunities, played high-tempo football from kick-off and got on the front foot.
"They played with a desire and hunger to get the ball and when they got it they worked very hard in possession. Some of the football was a joy to watch and a great credit has got to go to the players."
