Daniel Bogdanovic's brace boosted Barnsley's Championship play-off hopes and dealt a blow to Nottingham Forest's chances of automatic promotion.
Bogdanovic struck early with a looping header from Stephen Foster's long ball.
The striker then doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Robert Earnshaw fouled Filipe Teixeira in the box.
Dexter Blackstock pulled one back from close range but Forest's sixth straight away defeat leaves them eight points adrift of second-placed West Brom.
Barnsley boss Mark Robins: "We know all about our character. It's not a surprise.
"We've become a team that's known to take the scalps of teams at the top of the league and not hit those heights when playing teams at the bottom.
"That's got to change; we've got to maintain the form we've shown over the last couple of weeks."
Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies: "Whatever happened in January was entirely up to the owners. All I could do was recommend and advise and unfortunately things never happened.
"But as a manager I will always do the best I can with what I've got.
"I will work as hard as I can to continue to keep this young team and stay bright, happy and bubbly."
