Peter Whittingham scores his sixth penalty of the season
Gianni Zuiverloon secured West Bromwich Albion a point at play-off chasing Cardiff City to edge the Baggies back to the top of the Championship.
Peter Whittingham broke the deadlock as he fired in his 19th goal of the season with an early penalty after striker Jay Bothroyd was fouled by Jonas Olsson.
Andwele Slory hit the post before Dutch defender Zuiverloon's leveller, scoring after his initial shot was parried.
Chris Wood and Simon Cox missed late chances for West Brom to win it.
Wood was handed a golden chance to win the game in the 70th minute but he could only send Zuiverloon's cross wide before substitute Cox's effort was cleared off the line by Chris Burke.
Burke, himself, missed a glorious chance with five minutes remaining as Michael Chopra's pull-back found its way to the Scottish winger after Olsson's weak clearance but Burke fired wide when he should have hit the target.
Form side West Brom, though, had to settle for a point as the division's best travellers were held in the battle of the Championship's top goal-scorers - but the draw hoisted the Baggies above Newcastle to the summit, for 24 hours at least.
Cardiff were missing six first-team players and West Brom were without nine as the Bluebirds remained fifth.
And it was Whittingham who opened the scoring for the hosts as his sixth penalty of the season gave Cardiff an eighth minute lead.
Bothroyd, who caused the visitors constant problems in the first half, tangled with Albion centre-back Olsson in the area resulting in an early spot-kick which Whittingham cracked down the middle.
But Cardiff lost goal-scorer Whittingham to injury just before the half-hour mark as Jones' injury woes continued to deepen.
Burke, who was allowed a free run on goal before opening the scoring in Cardiff's 2-0 win at The Hawthorns in December, this time saw his effort saved by Scott Carson when presented with a similar opportunity.
But just as a pretty ordinary first half looked to be drawing to a close, Dorrans found the advanced Zuiverloon and his shot was pushed on to a post by Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall before the right-back poked home from close range to level the scores.
Bothroyd and Ross McCormack went close for Cardiff in the second-half but the play-off chasers were happy to hang on for a point and have lost just once in eight league games.
Cardiff 'hanging in' promotion chase
Cardiff City manager Dave Jones said:
"A draw was a fair result.
"I can't fault my players for the effort they put in and there are a lot of tired legs in the dressing room.
"I am very proud of all of them and couldn't ask them for any more. It was like two boxers slugging it out on the pitch tonight and neither would give an inch."
Di Matteo bemoans Cardiff penalty
West Bromwich Albion manager Roberto Di Matteo said:
"We feel a little disappointed not to win the game.
"We had a number of chances in the second half but had no luck.
"It is a tough, competitive division and I am pleased with the players' performance tonight and now we are back on top we must continue to gain points to make sure we stay there.
"Jay Bothroyd was very clever in moving in front of our player to convince the referee that it was a penalty but on a positive note we have no more injuries to report."
