Bristol City 2-0 Blackpool

Goals from Nicky Maynard and Danny Haynes gave Bristol City a deserved victory over in-form Blackpool.

City created a succession of chances before Maynard put them ahead with a spectacular overhead kick.

Blackpool responded well and Ben Burgess saw his header saved by Adriano Basso, while Rob Edwards nodded wide.

Substitute Haynes met Maynard's clever backheel to make it 2-0 and only a fine Paul Rachubka save stopped Marvin Elliott adding a third goal.

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson:
"It was a really important match for us.

"It's a huge game for us at Newcastle on Saturday, and one the players can now look forward to.

"We knew if we won we'd go to Newcastle hot on the heels of the top six.

"We had one or two playing tonight not fully fit, and all credit to them for getting through the 90 minutes."

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway told BBC Radio Lancashire:
"I don't think we turned up in the first half.

"I think we thought we were a good team and we had earnt the right to moan at anyone if they didn't pass the ball properly.

"We were peppering their goal late on but couldn't hit a cow's backside with a banjo.

"When I brought Ben Burgess off I didn't like his reaction but that's all behind us now."
