Newcastle were pushed all the way in a hard-fought victory over Plymouth.
The hosts scored early with Stephen Taylor nodding in Geremi's corner but Karl Duguid equalised after the break with good work from Cillian Sheridan.
Newcastle keeper Steve Harper saved Gary Sawyer's shot but then substitute Danny Guthrie crossed in for Kevin Nolan to head in at the back post.
Andy Carroll, who also hit the bar in injury time, secured the points with a stunning shot from just inside the box.
Newcastle caretaker boss Chris Hughton: "There were periods of the game where we made hard work of it.
"For whatever reason, we weren't able to sustain it and of course the longer the game goes without getting that second one, Plymouth are lifted by the occasion and feel they can get something."
Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock:
"I have had two draws and six defeats. At the end of the day, there's only so far a board can wait for me to turn it around.
"But they have been very committed to the cause. They see there is light at the end of the tunnel, but we have got to turn it soon.
"I am very, very confident that these players will turn it around."
