Barnsley lost their fourth consecutive Championship game with a disappointing home defeat to Reading - prompting the departure of boss Simon Davey.
Andy Gray's early header put the Tykes ahead but Alex Pearce hit back when he turned the ball in after a corner.
Goalkeeper Luke Steele then hauled down Jimmy Kebe after a long ball and Noel Hunt drove home the penalty to hand the visitors a narrow lead.
Two minutes later Kebe picked out Hunt who headed home to secure the points.
The result was greeted with derision by Barnsley fans, who called for under-pressure manager Davey to go - and the club released a statement later in the evening confirming his departure "by mutual consent".
Barnsley manager Simon Davey, speaking before his departure was confirmed: "We are as disappointed as the fans. We don't like losing. I am there with their frustration.
"I thought we started the game well. We were on top and got a goal, then conceded a goal to a free-kick which wasn't a free-kick.
"In the second half we lost a penalty. I've not seen it since so I am not saying if it was or wasn't. On first showing I didn't think it was, then in a space of a minute we are 3-1 down."
Reading boss Brendan Rodgers: "We played some good football and worked very hard. I thought we were excellent and positive.
"We showed a lot of resilience because it's a hard place to come to. We will always score goals and I am delighted for the supporters.
"I am very positive we can do well this year. This group of players will get better and better. Ambition is a great starting point for me.
"I signed for three years and I have brought in a lot of players. I want to be a fixture and that's why I came here."
