Kevin Nolan impressed again in midfield and had a couple of long-range efforts on goal which narrowly missed the Wednesday goal.
Taylor, playing at right midfield with debutant Danny Simpson at right-back, had another chance in the second half but struck his shot wide after good work from Xisco and Ameobi.
But in the end, Ameobi's sole strike proved to be enough to give Chris Hughton's Newcastle their seventh point from three games and leave the majority of the 43,904 St James' Park crowd happy.
Newcastle caretaker manager Chris Hughton: "I don't think it was the prettiest win, but nevertheless it was pleasing.
"We've got the win and that's the most important thing."
Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws on Newcastle's chances of bouncing straight back into the top flight: "They should, with the quality they have within the squad.
"All right, they have lost a few, but they have still got a huge amount of players who have got real quality and are Premier League players."
