Swansea City earned their first Championship point under new manager Paulo Sousa as the clash at Liberty Stadium ended goalless.
But they saw a victory chance go begging after outstanding Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici saved Mark Gower's penalty.
Midfielder Gower's effort came after Kalifa Cisse's handball.
The hosts dominated the second period, but the Royals owed their point to heroic keeper Federici.
The result lifted the Swans off the bottom of the table, one place above Barnsley.
Sousa pleased with Swans effort
Swansea boss Paulo Sousa:
"There was only one team playing.
"They did everything they do in training. The second half was fantastic.
"I will tell my players to keep doing the same. We need to keep the same attitude and belief.
"Our defensive organization came very well after 10 minutes."
Reading boss Brendan Rodgers: "It was a determined and resilient performance but we were on the back foot for most of the second half.
"It was a clean sheet which is our second from three games but we have a problem up front as we still haven't scored a goal.
"Our first few matches have been good learning curves for our young players and we will improve but Swansea are an excellent side playing good football and I must pay tribute to them."
