Rob Hulse's second-half header earned victory for Derby County to secure their Championship status against already relegated Charlton Athletic.
Hulse found the net after converting Barry Bannan's header back across goal in a game of few chances.
Hulse had earlier gone close with two headers from set pieces while Martin Albrechtsen also went close.
Charlton had few chances with Nick Bailey failing to trouble keeper Steve Bywater with two long-range shots.
Derby County boss Nigel Clough told BBC Sport: "The way other results went a point would have been enough. But it's a huge relief.
"We can now start looking in earnest at next season and the biggest thing is to get the injured players back.
"We had a go at them in the second half and when we did that we looked a completely different side."
Charlton boss Phil Parkinson:

"Summer can't come soon enough. We have to start rebuilding.
"We want to keep the good players and add to the squad, but Charlton are a big club and players should want to play for us.
"I think there's a great chance that this time next year we will be celebrating promotion."
