Paul Heffernan's early goal for Doncaster was enough to see off Bristol City at the Keepmoat Stadium.
After just four minutes Heffernan picked up Martin Woods' fine through-ball and the striker kept his composure to slot home past Adriano Basso.
City slowly got back into the game with Liam Fontaine heading wide of the near post from Lee Johnson's corner.
Nicky Maynard also went close for the visitors and Michael McIndoe shot wide of the post, but Doncaster stood firm.
Doncaster assistant manager Richard O'Kelly: "There's no real targets. We are looking to win the next game, looking to get back on the training pitch, go down to Swansea and put another good performance in.
"The division is as tight as it's ever been this year. You can't tell. We might already be safe now. Don't know, daren't speculate. HBOS did that and look what happened to them."
Bristol City manager Gary Johnson: "I thought it was a poor game and I didn't enjoy it at all. Sorry to the supporters who came as they didn't really have a lot to get behind.
"I thought the lads looked a little leggy. Today was just being out there day and that wasn't good enough.
"Second half, I don't think they had an opportunity it was just us trying to get it in the box. It ended up with too many players in the penalty area."
