Plymouth goalkeeper Romain Larrieu pulled off a string of sensational saves as the Pilgrims drew at Preston.
Jamie Mackie put Plymouth ahead from six yards after a corner struck Youl Mawene and ran into his path.
Jon Parkin equalised with a left-foot strike from Ross Wallace's cross before Andy Lonergan tipped over Paul Gallacher's free-kick.
Larrieu saved from Elliott and twice denied Ross Wallace and Parkin in the latter stages of the game.
Preston boss Alan Irvine on the form of Romain Larrieu:"They were magnificent saves on both occasions.
"It wasn't for the want of trying, for periods in the game we were very good but we just didn't convert the pressure and the chances into goals.
"It was a really frustrating night. We had an awful lot of chances at goal."
Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock:"There aren't going to be many teams coming here who will get anything against a side like Preston.
"Getting that away goal has been like a monkey on our shoulders. We have hit the bar, had efforts cleared off the line and goals disallowed.
"We have to go and do the business at home now. If we start getting wins at home we'll climb up the table."
