An early double from Jon Stead was enough to maintain Ipswich's play-off surge while sinking Barnsley towards the Championship relegation zone.
Stead fired his side ahead after eight minutes with a neat, low shot underneath Heinz Muller.
And he doubled their lead two minutes later, taking advantage of defensive confusion to bundle the ball home from close range.
Daniel Bogdanovic replied for Barnsley in the 47th minute with a calm finish.
