Skipper Garry Monk helps Ferrie Bodde celebrate

A stunning Ferrie Bodde strike after 19 minutes put Swansea City on the way to a much-needed Championship win against Preston at Deepdale.

The Dutch midfielder latched on to a loose ball to fire home from more than 35 yards out.

Jordi Gomez's 79th-minute penalty after he was fouled by James McEveley ensured victory for Roberto Martinez's side.

Defeat was the third successive setback for Preston, who have won five of their 11 games this season.

Preston boss Alan Irvine:
"We could have easily been two goals up in the opening 10 minutes but we were made to pay for our wastefulness and mistakes have cost us," said Irvine.

"It certainly was a wondrous strike from Ferrie Bodde, but the most disappointing thing for me is we were fully prepared for it.

"We had assessed his ability to strike the ball and we were fully aware of the power he can hit his shots with and I know (goalkeeper) Andy Lonergan would agree with me when I say he should have saved it."

Swansea boss Roberto Martinez:
"It was a fantastic win and the response we needed after the first half-an-hour at Reading and I think it again showed the personality and character of the dressing room.

"It couldn't have been a bigger test in terms of dealing with the long ball, set-pieces and very effective and powerful players up front."
