Southampton 0-0 Barnsley

Bottom-of-the-table Barnsley turned in a stubborn display to secure a first away point of the season at fellow Championship strugglers Southampton.

Saints dominated but were unable to find a way past keeper Heinze Muller.

Bradley Wright-Phillips, Tomas Pekhart and Adam Lallana and David McGoldrick were all denied by the German.

Barnsley barely threatened but Iain Hume arguably wasted the best chance of the match when he rounded keeper Kelvin Davis but hit the side netting.

Southampton manager Jan Poortvliet:
"The players have the hunger to play football but not the hunger to score.

"I am disappointed because this was a great opportunity to win a game of football but we failed to take our chances.

"The spirit is still good and we know there is plenty more to come once we start to find the target again."

Barnsley manager Simon Davey:

"I think every manager is under pressure and if you don't get results then people are going to vent their frustrations.

"But it is up to me to change things around as I am the manager and we have to keep working hard.

"There were a lot of positives to come out of the game, a draw and a clean sheet, but there are also a lot of things we need to work on."
