Cardiff City maintained their unbeaten start to their Championship campaign while Derby County remain stuck on one win from seven starts.
Derby defender Martin Albrechtsen drilled home a left-footed shot after 30 minutes at Pride Park.
But the dominant visitors were rewarded on 68 minutes after Miles Addison fouled Joe Ledley in the penalty area.
Referee Mark Haywood pointed to the spot and Ross McCormack powered the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.
Derby County manager Paul Jewell:
"We didn't play well but we have got something out of the game.
"We would definitely have lost a month ago. We'd have fallen to pieces when they equalised, but there is a lot more resolve and desire in the team now.
"Determination has got to come first and I am pleased we have shown that. It's going to take a few more results for us to relax completely and play the football we're capable of."
Cardiff City manager Dave Jones: "I feel slightly upset because we haven't come away with maximum points.
"We should be a bit more clinical in front of goal. I thought we were superb in the first-half, but without the cutting edge. Even with the penalty we got we were trying to walk it into the back of the net.
"But in the second-half I thought we got at them and amongst them and got a fully deserved point. I thought the match officials were poor for both teams."
