Norwich's new strike partnership of Arturo Lupoli and Antoine Sibierski combined to defeat 10-man Plymouth.
Sibierski flicked the ball into the path of Lupoli who finished clinically from 12 yards to give Norwich the lead.
Matthew Pattison hit the bar and Lupoli converted the rebound, but it was ruled out for offside, before Krisztian Timar was sent off for two bookable offences.
Sibierski doubled the lead with a free-kick and Paul Gallagher netted a late consolation for the home side.
Plymouth manager Paul Sturrock: "At the end of the day sometimes you make mistakes with selections and in hindsight it is easy to see that I did that today. I hold my hand up.
"I am seeking honesty from my players and some of them are not giving me that and they have been told that in there. I called all the players in and told them that - and that, out there today, was not good enough.
"You are hopeful that their character and their attitude and will match your own, and your desire to win, but I have got two or three who I don't believe are equal to that task."
Norwich boss Glenn Roeder:
"We can play a lot better and we have let Plymouth Argyle off very lightly. I don't think (Plymouth manager) Paul Sturrock would have had any complaints if we had beaten them by more.
"We hit the woodwork three times and missed other opportunities and our play did not come anywhere near as good as it was against Birmingham two weeks ago.
"We are much better than that and our standards are much higher but the positives are that is our first win - and it's been too long coming."
