Relegated Scunthorpe and Colchester bid farewell to the Championship with a goal-filled draw at Glanford Park.
Kevin McLeod's header put the visitors ahead before Jonathan Forte levelled from the edge of the six-yard box.
Scott Vernon's spectacular overhead strike and McLeod's 25-yard lob put the U's two ahead shortly after the break.
But Paul Hayes pulled one back with a volley and levelled from close range to rescue a point for the Iron and cap an entertaining encounter.
Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins: "This has been a terrific season for us and we have given it our best shot.
"My players have shown commitment right the way through the campaign and they did it again today when trailing 3-1.
"We are a small club with small resources but there is no shortage of ambition to bounce straight back."
Colchester manager Geraint Williams: "We scored three great goals and looked dangerous going forward but poor defending once again let us down.
"We didn't want to be relegated with a whimper and I think we showed that. Now promotion has got to be the word as we look to next season in League One.
"Swansea and Nottingham Forest have both gone up playing good football and that should give us confidence."
