Dexter Blackstock's first-half strike earned QPR a deserved win and ended Charlton's play-off hopes.
Blackstock turned Patrick McCarthy and neatly placed the ball beyond Nicky Weaver for the 15th minute winner.
McCarthy then came close to scoring an own goal when the ball struck his shin and went just inches over the crossbar.
QPR continued to dominate after the break, but Charlton's Chris Iwelumo wasted an opportunity to level when he shot over the top from close range.
QPR manager Luigi De Canio:
"I'm very happy indeed because from the outside it might have looked as though we didn't have the motivation to win the game.
"But even with a few important absentees we played an excellent game. What gives me most joy is that we still have a lot of room for improvement."
Charlton manager Alan Pardew:
"I've a good idea of some flaws in the squad which we did not correct in the last transfer window and we have to correct them in the summer.
"It's very painful. I've got some honest players who are hurting now. It's been a season of frustration.
"I'm convinced I can turn this side into one good enough to get promoted."
