A point against 10-man Watford was enough to take Stoke to the top of the Championship table.
Darius Henderson failed to convert a penalty for the second time in a week as Watford played out a sixth consecutive draw.
Henderson's 54th-minute spot-kick was saved by Stoke keeper Carlo Nash, after Andy Griffin fouled John-Joe O'Toole.
Watford captain John Eustace was sent off on 23 minutes for a high challenge on Stoke's Richard Cresswell.
"With the two penalty misses, we can consider ourselves unfortunate.
"I'll have to have a chat with Darius before I decide if he'll take the next one."
"Watford didn't play on Saturday and then played Bristol on Tuesday. We played Saturday and then had to go to Norwich and didn't get home 'til 3am.
"It takes its toll. Then we come and play against 'warriors'. The Football League should look at the fixtures. "
