Managerless Southampton secured a draw at Crystal Palace after Stern John's late goal cancelled out James Scowcroft's 73rd-minute strike. The Trinidad and Tobago striker earned a fifth successive draw on the road for Saints who could have scored earlier.
Midfielder Jason Euell sent a weak header wide after only 10 minutes when one-on-one with keeper Julian Speroni.
Palace's Ben Watson hit the woodwork twice in a match that showed little quality from the promotion contenders.
Southampton caretaker boss John Gorman:
"We thoroughly merited a draw. "Their goal actually came from something we were handling well all game, a high ball, but it fell to Scowcroft and he finished it well.
"It was hard to keep the ball down but we tried to play football and we got what we deserved, especially after the week we've had."
Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock:
"I thought we were the only side who were going to win it - they were pretty but we had the better chances. "We got punished with an elementary defensive error by Shaun Derry, who is one of our most experienced players.
"That's two games we've thrown away with elementary defensive mistakes so we just have to get back to basics."
