West Brom 5-0 Scunthorpe

Phillips was in fine form at Scunthorpe's expense
West Brom striker Kevin Phillips grabbed a brace and missed a penalty as his side thrashed 10-man Scunthorpe.

Phillips fired in the opener before Scunthorpe's Marcus Williams was red-carded for a professional foul.

Robert Koren's low shot and a Phillips strike into the top corner extended the Baggies's lead.

Phillips then had a penalty saved but it was not telling as Zolten Gera hammered in a shot and Craig Beattie's effort completed the win.

  • West Brom boss Tony Mowbray:
"There were some great individual goals.

"You almost had a goal of the season competition in one game. There was some pretty spectacular stuff out there.

"I enjoy watching good football and I thought we moved the ball around the pitch well. I enjoy winning. That is why we are here."

  • Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins:
"For the first goal, in my opinion, and probably 25,000 people in the stadium the player was five yards offside.

"The linesman was closer to me than being up with play. He did not give the offside and that was very disappointing.

"I have then gone and stood five yards outside the technical area, not sworn or used any abusive language, and the referee and the fourth official have come over and asked me to go and sit in the stand.

"As for the sending off, I had a super view in the stand of the players colliding.

"I could clearly see the referee signal the players had collided and then the linesman, with his new Christmas present, put his flag up and then the referee came over.

"To be a red card was really damaging for us because it was going to be hard enough as it was against a top team with 11 men let alone 10."
