Jonathan Walters smashed a hat-trick as rampant Ipswich hammered Bristol City. Walters came in from the right and hit a 22-yard shot which was deflected past Adriano Basso, while David Wright headed in to make it 2-0.
City's Bradley Orr was sent off for a foul on Danny Haynes and Tommy Miller converted the penalty and Garvan found Walters to rifle in from 12 yards.
Pablo Counago netted the fifth after a 50-yard run and Walters sealed the rout and his treble with a similar effort.
Ipswich boss Jim Magilton:
"We knew we had to start brightly and not allow them to settle into a pattern or routine. "They have come up from League One and been very good on their travels - but we started very quickly.
"With them going down to 10 men, it can be a tricky situation. But we passed the ball well and fluently - and it was a good day at the office."
Bristol City boss Gary Johnson:
"Nothing went right and we did not start right. They started off like a house on fire, and we didn't handle it. "We are always humble in victory and we will be resilient in defeat. It was poor all the way through, and I'd be cheating people if I said different.
"It's been a bad day at the office, but we will 're-decorate the office' and be back."
