Plymouth survived a late onslaught from Charlton to triumph and leapfrog them into fourth place in the Championship. David Norris set up Sylvan Ebanks-Blake to put Argyle ahead but Charlton were soon level thanks to a fortunate goal.
Argyle goalkeeper Luke McCormick tipped Danny Mills' shot on to the post but the ball hit his back and rolled in.
Barry Hayles latched on to a Lee Martin pass to restore Plymouth's lead before Chris Iwelumo and Andy Reid wasted good chances to equalise for the home side.
Charlton manager Alan Pardew:
"We let in two soft goals and our play was great to a point but we didn't look as sharp in the final third. "The referee and the goalkeeper's performance are excuses that could have been taken out of the equation tonight if we had better finishing.
"We need to get a win under our belts but we need to be big and brave because the league is wide open."
Plymouth boss Ian Holloway:
"I loved the work ethic, we were never say die and I am very proud of this football club. "People don't take me seriously but I care about people with a passion and this club is going places.
"Sometimes us managers fall on our sword but if we continue to play like that, it won't happen to me."
