Saints ended Burnley's unbeaten home record with an enthralling victory in an open encounter at Turf Moor. Bradley Wright-Phillips collected Jhon Viafara's ball over the top to slot the visitors ahead in the second minute.
After Stern John and Wright-Phillips both hit the post, Jason Euell headed in Nathan Dyer's cross, before Chris McCann converted Andy Gray's pass.
John beat a static defence to restore the Saints' cushion but substitute Ade Akinbiyi set up a tense finale.
Southampton boss George Burley:
"We could have been four goals up in 15 minutes. We scored two and hit the woodwork twice and when those don't go in you get a bit anxious. "We always look capable of scoring but we concede too many and that is an area we will have to look at.
"It is a good result because this is a very difficult place to come. We are beginning to string a few wins together and find some consistency."
