Sheffield Wednesday clocked up their first Championship points of the season with victory at home to Hull. Francis Jeffers opened his account for the Owls with superb goal after 40 minutes, exchanging passes with Deon Burton before finding the top corner.
Owls substitute Wade Small hit the post as they ended a run of six defeats.
Hull's best chance came when Jay-Jay Okocha's corner was headed across goal by Damien Delaney and Michael Turner's effort was cleared off the line.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws:
"I'm emotionally drained and gave my players a right rollicking for putting me through this agony. "It's a great relief. It's been a long time coming. We needed bravery and calm and this had all the ingredients.
"There's been a millstone around our necks which has been getting heavier - but it showed morale is still there."
Hull boss Phil Brown:
"The difference between the two teams was the quality of the strike. Francis Jeffers showed a bit of Premier League quality with the finish. "We lack final-third quality and they produced it for the defining moment.
"I didn't think we deserved to be down at half-time. Did we deserve to lose it? We deserved to get something."
