Sylvan Ebanks-Blake hit a late penalty to earn Plymouth a point and send a get well message to boss Ian Holloway, who was taken ill just before kick-off. Alan Lee looked to have sealed victory for 10-man Ipswich after he netted his third goal of the season after just a minute into the game.
Ipswich's Fabian Wilnis then saw red for a cynical foul on David Norris.
And after David Wright brought down Peter Halmosi, Ebanks-Blake converted to snatch a well-earned point.
Plymouth asssistant manager Tim Breacker:
"We gave ourselves a mountain to climb.
"They played a different shape, which we thought they might, and that threw us a little bit as well.
"But gradually we got back into it and got the goal, although we did not get ourselves much time to get another."
Ipswich boss Jim Magilton:
"I am disappointed. We started the game very brightly, got a very good goal and then conceded ground and conceded possession too easily.
"I have spoken before with regards possession of the football and I don't think we have done that too well.
"As much as we defended very well all day I would like us to have a little bit more quality with the ball."
