Hull lifted their hopes of Championship survival with a vital victory against promotion-chasing Preston. Phil Brown's side recovered from losing John Welsh through injury early on to score after 29 minutes, Nicky Forster heading home from Ray Parlour's corner.
Preston suffered a blow of their own shortly after, when top scorer David Nugent went off with a back problem.
Hull struck again with 20 minutes left, David Livermore heading in after good work by Dean Windass and Sam Ricketts.
Hull boss Phil Brown on responding to Tuesday's 5-2 home drubbing by Ipswich:
"This game was won on the training ground on Wednesday. We had to face some harsh lessons after Tuesday. "We were right to receive the criticism - you have to be honest and say we all made mistakes so I had to make changes.
"The more winners we have the more chance we have of surviving. We just need to be more consistent to stay up."
Preston manager Paul Simpson:
"It was as disappointing as we've been all season. "I don't think we tested their keeper all game and for an attack-minded team, that was the biggest disappointment. We've allowed them to dictate the game.
"Preston have been a nearly team for the last few years and I hope we are not going to be the nearly team again."
