Alistair Campbell enjoys Burnley's win |
Richard Chaplow went some way to easing boss Stan Ternent's striking problems as Burnley broke their Turf Moor duck.
And he also helped brighten the day for lifelong Burnley fan Alastair Campbell, former media chief for Prime Minister Tony Blair, who announced his resignation on Friday.
Campbell was at his beloved Turf Moor to watch Burnley earn a well-deserved win.
Chaplow - at 18 the youngest player on the pitch - capped a competitive display in the centre of midfield with the decisive goal seven minutes after the interval.
His emphatic strike, his first senior goal, sparked a period of incessant Burnley pressure which included a missed penalty by Robbie Blake, and it was a measure of Chaplow's influence on the game that he was given a standing ovation on his withdrawal three minutes from time.
Chaplow's contribution aside, the hosts showed a worrying lack of cutting edge up front, and they were thankful that Steve Jones could only hit the post when well placed shortly after Blake's failure from the spot.
An open and entertaining first 10 minutes saw a succession of long-range shots, Crewe's Jones, David Brammer and Kenny Lunt trying their luck while Blake responded for Burnley.
Glen Little should have done better when he found himself 18 yards from goal - he fired wildly over the crossbar - and Blake was even more culpable from the penalty spot.
Dean Ashton's handball, spotted by the assistant referee, gifted Blake an ideal opportunity to double Burnley's advantage, but his penalty kick was superbly saved by Ince, diving to his right.
But for the woodwork, Burnley would have been punished for failing to convert their chances as Jones, set up by Ashton, dragged his shot on to the post.
They clung on, though, surviving a spirited late Crewe rally that saw Jones and Ashton blaze wide to register their first home win of the season.
